A Hoyer lift is a balanced sling hoist used to move completely or partially immobile patients from their beds to wheel chairs, bedside commodes or chairs. Using a Hoyer lift provides a comfortable transfer with a minimum of physical effort by a nurse or caregiver. Heavy-duty Hoyer lifts can also safely lift patients weighing more than 600 pounds. Costs vary, and some insurance companies cover the necessary expense of a unit.
- Manual Hoyer Lifts:
The most reasonably priced sling lifts are manual Hoyer lifts, which operate using hydraulic pressure. They feature adjustable bases, which add stability and allow for easier maneuverability in doorways and other tight areas.
- Electric Hoyer Lifts:
Electric Hoyer lifts are a popular choice for nursing homes, home care companies and in-home care givers. Electric lifts are operated using a hand control to lift or lower the patient with the touch of a button. In the case of power loss, these lifts can be controlled manually.
- Battery-Powered Hoyer Lifts:
These battery-powered patient lifts feature removable and rechargeable battery packs that can be fully charged when the unit is not in use. Although the units are light-weight, the high-powered electric motors are capable of lifting up to 1000 pounds.
